KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas and Missouri drivers should prepare for a steep price increase at the pump, experts say. Gas Buddy, which monitors gas prices around the United States, Canada and Australia, predicts gas prices in the Midwest will spike anywhere from 50 cents to $1 per gallon over the next several days. Experts fear gas prices could get worse before they get better There are few details on what's leading to the increase, but Gas Buddy says a refinery outage could be to blame. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said the price hike could be limited if the EPA switches to the winter blend of gasoline early. "The spike in gas prices may be relatively short-lived, but the situation remains volatile," De Haan said in a news release. As of Thursday, wholesale gas prices in the Midwest were already up nearly $1 per gallon from one week ago, and AAA reports a gallon of gas is up 7 cents in Missouri and 3 cents in Kansas. But AAA did note on Thursday that the...Colorado Senate Democrats select Denver senator as No. 2 leader

BOULDER — As Dylan Edwards flashed four fingers in the end zone, Tyrone Byrd’s Big Red heart slipped on cement shoes and sank to the bottom of Jamaica Bay.“Unfortunately, I think CU is gonna get us,” Byrd, a former Nebraska safety and now a State Farm agent in Commerce City, told me on the eve of Buffs-Huskers Part LXXII on Saturday at Folsom Field. “With what Deion (Sanders) is teaching and developing, with his high standards and (given that) the guys are buying in — they only had six penalties (in the opener).“And they’ve got some guys. Like he said, ‘I’m bringing dawgs.’ I don’t think (the Cornhuskers) have those kind of guys, where they think this way, they think, ‘I’m going to dominate.’ We have a lot of good athletes, but I just don’t know if we have enough guys that have that right mindset.”You know how you might not love something, or somebody, but at the same time, darn it, you just ca...Video captures boogie boarders riding on bioluminescent waves in Huntington Beach

Bioluminescence is not an unfamiliar sight in California, but when it's spotted, it's often aquatic creatures playing in the lit waters.Earlier this week, however, a photographer and videographer captured some humans getting in on the fun.In Huntington Beach, boogie boarders took to the ocean to catch some glowing waves, which are usually the result of plankton. Stunning video shows school of fish playing in bioluminescent water "It’s been a while since we’ve seen it here but the waves this time around were unbelievably bright," Patrick Coyne, who goes by @patrickc_la on Instagram, shared on the social media platform. Let’s hope it’s there again tonight."Coyne, who has a talent for capturing stunning bioluminescent scenes, previously shared videos of dolphins frolicking in the waves off Newport Beach in 2020 and a school of mullet playing in bioluminescent water last year.11 Students Hurt in Pedestrian Accident on Tulare Avenue [Fresno, CA]

“Hippest Trip: The Soul Train Musical” roared into San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theater Wednesday night in an explosively kinetic world premiere.Dominique Morisseau’s propulsive new jukebox musical has its sights set on Broadway, where “Ain’t Too Proud,” the Temptations musical, which she also wrote and which debuted at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, generated great acclaim for its celebration of the Motown sound.Movement is the engine that drives “Trip,” a retro pop music delight that pays tribute to “Soul Train,” the groundbreaking TV dance party that brought Black singers and dancers into the mainstream American imagination from the ‘70s to the 2000’s. In a society often ruled by visuals, TV shows take on outsize influence over the culture. In the case of “Soul Train,” the influence was colossal, shining an unwavering spotlight on black culture through the ebb and flow of decades of social tumult. It was a radical alternative to “American Bandstand” in which peo...Bill cracking down on California school textbook bans heads to Gov. Newsom

Banning textbook bans in California is the goal of a bill now headed to the governor’s desk.In mainly party-line votes, the Democratic-controlled state legislature on Thursday, Sept. 7, passed AB 1078, legislation seen as Sacramento’s counter-strike against conservative school boards that keep certain textbooks and related materials out of the classroom. In most cases, the boards say they’re protecting children from pornography and other harmful content. Critics contend they’re trying to erase any mention of LGBTQ people or truthful lessons about the role of race in U.S. history.A textbook showdown occurred earlier this year in Temecula, where the school board rejected an elementary social studies curriculum with supplemental materials that referenced the late LGBTQ civil rights leader Harvey Milk. Two board members called Milk a “pedophile.”Gov. Gavin Newsom threatened to send textbooks to Temecula and fine the Temecula Valley Unified School District if the board did not approve the...Latest news
