AUSTIN (KXAN) -- With plenty of people turning to swimming pools and local waterways for reprieve this summer, some might unfortunately find themselves dealing with swimmer's ear. But what, exactly, is it, and what causes it?Mayo Clinic defines swimmer's ear as an infection in the outer ear canal, often caused by water that lingers in your ear and leads to bacteria growth. Symptoms traditionally start off mild before worsening if the infection is left untreated. What are the symptoms of swimmer's ear?Mild signs include itchiness in your ear canal, slight redness inside of your ear, some clear, odorless fluid draining from your ear and mild discomfort. That discomfort is worsened if you pull on your outer ear or push on the tragus, or "bump" toward the front of your ear.Moderate symptoms noted include more intense itching within the ear along with increased pain and extensive redness of the ear. More fluid can be found draining from the ear along with the feeling of "fullness" in the...

De’Vonna Pittman spent most of her life using chemical relaxers to straighten her hair. One day, she decided to cut it all off, “to experience my hair the way it grew out of my scalp,” she said. A week after cutting her hair, she realized the products she’d been using for so long didn’t work for her natural hair, so she started making her own.Nature’s Syrup Hair and Skin Care, founded and run by Pittman, has over 800 e-commerce customers and is now available at Macy’s Marketplace, an online platform that allows customers to purchase directly from third-party sellers.Based in Arden Hills and founded in 2017, Nature’s Syrup was not an overnight success, but rather a grassroots labor of love with the goal of helping individuals feel comfortable in their own skin. But it’s origins really precede that. Pittman began formulating products and sharing them with her community in 2013. “I started making products for people at my church and they loved it so much, they said they would pay ...

Broncos way-too-early 53-man roster projection

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 18:03:37 GMT

The only glimpse we’ve seen of the Broncos have been in pad-less practices during OTAs and mandatory minicamp, so it’s hard to judge how the roster will look when they face the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 1. But let’s try anyway. Here is a way-too-early projection of Denver’s 53-man roster with more than two weeks left until training camp. This should be fun.OffenseQuarterbacks (3): Russell Wilson, Jarrett Stidham, Ben DiNucciThere was a lot of bad football played in Denver during the 2022 season, especially at the quarterback position. Wilson, who was traded from Seattle to help end the franchise’s losing ways, posted career lows in touchdown passes (16), completion percentage (60.5%) and quarterback rating (36.7) while leading the Broncos to a 5-12 record. While some Broncos fans are still trying to erase Wilson’s performance from their brains, there is reason for optimism in 2023. Wilson has lost weight during the offseason, plus having head coach Sean Payton, an offensive guru...

Avalanche prospect Sam Malinski developed in the shadows during year without games at Cornell

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 18:03:37 GMT

The end of a Sam Malinski shift was a study in mannerisms for one college assistant coach. It was almost a miniature game of facial expressions. Always with the same ending.Malinski would skate to the Cornell bench while Ben Syer was still marveling at whatever high-skilled maneuver his pupil had just pulled off. Malinski would shoot him an ever-so-slightly prolonged look. “Straight-faced,” Syer remembers. “Wouldn’t really give you much of a reaction.” Like he was waiting for acknowledgment.Syer wanted to see the reaction Malinski was hiding.“You kind of had to give him a little pat on the back,” he said. Only then would Malinski crack a smirk, the kind that said: “Yeah, I know that was pretty good.”The two sides of Malinski were present in those moments: the part of him that learned modesty the hard way, getting cut by a USHL team in his first year of junior hockey, and the part of him that was starting to realize his talent and...

Walters: Annual report shows Californians’ crime fears are justified

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 18:03:37 GMT

Political officeholders at all levels and of all ideological stripes habitually pursue a time-dishonored practice when releasing data.If it’s positive, politicians try to maximize its importance with lavish news conferences and self-congratulatory declarations. If, on the other hand, the data have a negative cast, they will be released quietly, often late on a Friday afternoon, to minimize media coverage.California’s annual report on crime was released this year on the Friday before what for many would be a four-day, Fourth of July holiday weekend. That’s a tipoff that it would not be good news – and, in fact, it received minimal media attention. The 2022 report revealed that the state’s violent crime rate increased by 6.1% since 2021, and property crime was up 6.2%. Homicides dipped very slightly, but robberies jumped by 10.2%.Attorney General Rob Bonta issued a low-key statement with the data release, saying, “While crime rates remain significantly below their historical highs...
